In Search of Mary: The Woman and the Symbol

by Sally Cunneen, Joanne Wyckoff (Editor)

Mary is more alive today than she was in the early Christian church, surfacing in art and worship in almost every culture on earth. Her appeal bridges the gap between the devotional and the secular, the uneducated and the sophisticated. But who is Mary and what exactly does she symbolize? How did a humble Jewish girl become the most honored woman in human history? Why is there so little about Mary in the Bible and so much about her in the art and history of Christianity, East and West? And why, in an age dominated by science and technology, does devotion to Mary persist?
In Search of Mary is Sally Cunneen's provocative response to these questions. As Cunneen eloquently points out, in order to see Mary whole, it is important to look at all the different visions and versions of her, revisiting history through the eyes of a present day searcher. Including the latest findings by historians, anthropologists, and psychologists, as well as art historians and religious scholars, In Search of Mary reveals what we know about the life of Mary, follows the history and development of her image over the last two thousand years, and explores the different ways that Mary has transformed the lives of people today.

As we struggle for greater unity in a divided world, In Search of Mary shows us a woman who can touch all people, regardless of their backgrounds. She is a profound reminder of the presence of the holy in ordinary life.

The Visions of the Children: The Apparitions
of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje

by Janice T. Connell, Robert Faricy (Introduction)

From Publishers Weekly
In June 1981, six teenagers in the village of Medjugorje, Yugoslavia (now Bosnia and Herzogovina), claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary, whom they say has continued to appear to them over the ensuing 10 years. This compilation of Connell's interviews with the six shows them standing up admirably to the scrutiny of church officials, as well as to the intense tourism that news of the apparitions generated in the area. Two of the women, now married with children, have less frequent visitations; the others continue to encounter Mary, and her message to them is consistent: God is present in the world and in people's lives, and we must repent to bring about peace. Connell, who gave up a Pennsylvania law practice to become the visionaries' spokesperson, argues that the Medjugorje phenomenon falls within the tradition of 20th-century Mariology--the study of and devotion to the mother of Jesus--although private revelations are not included in official church doctrine. She sounds a poignant note when reflecting that the village survived communism only to be threatened now by the Yugoslavian civil war. Photos not seen by PW .

Meetings With Mary : Visions of the Blessed Mother

by Janice T. Connell, Janice T. Conell, Robert Faricy List

Product Description:
Through the centuries and across the world, the Virgin Mary has appeared to ordinary people of every race and culture, from scholars to illiterates, from the devout to the unbelieving, from young children to the dying. In this exquisite and inspiring volume, Janice T. Connell chronicles authenticated Marian apparitions and messages Mary has brought from God--as mother, comforter, Queen of Angels, and Prophet of the Apocalypse.

Drawn from scripture, legend, and never-before-published eyewitness accounts, these are personal stories--the author's own, and her interviews with other visionaries--filled with beauty, wonder, and joy. Meetings with Mary ranges from Elijah's vision of Mary eight hundred years before her birth to the world-famous children of Medjugorje in Bosnia, whose encounters with her began in 1981 and continue daily. Here also are lesser-known, deeply touching encounters with the Mother, from an office worker in Holland to a Japanese nun, from a Jewish banker in Rome to an awestruck crowd of visionaries, few of them Christians or of any other faith, in Egypt.

Meetings with Mary asks also: as the millennium draws near, shadowed by disasters, disease, and brutal civil warfare, are Mary's frequent appearances a signal to the faithful? Perhaps she is calling us all to join her now on a voyage toward the eternal shores of peace, joy, and abiding love. . . .
"[Connell is] passionate about prayer and sharing her love of Jesus'
mother. . . . She has a way of simplifying complex theology."

Mother Mary's Teachings For The New World

by Ileah Van Hubbard, Ileah Van Hubbard

About the Author
Ileah Van Hubbard has given her life over to Mother Mary's guidance and direction. In May of 1996, Ileah traveled to Germany, Austria and Switzerland at Mother Mary's direction, leading large events to anchor Her light and love into the people. Following the popularity of these events, based on the hunger of the people for Mary's teachings and the fact that there is no book which covers this material, Mary requested that this book be brought forth, via her channeled message.

During her European tour, Ileah stopped in Ibiza, an island off the coast of Spain, and was given a two-week stay at a hotel which turned out to be one block away from an 8th Century basilica dedicated to Santa Maria de las Nieves. Each morning, Ileah would sit in the church and record Mary's message for the day, as well as responses to questions that were being asked. All the material for this book was recorded during that period. The photo on the cover of this book is the front altar of the basilica of Santa Maria de las Nieves.

In Mother Mary's Teachings for the New World, a series of messages and responses to questions about spiritual life and everyday living, Mother Mary speaks to us through Ileah Van Hubbard's channeled words.

Mother Mary speaks to us in simple words and phrases so that her teachings can be understood by anyone, of any religion. Her teachings center around the importance of each individual having his or her own inner connection with God. This transcends organized religion. There is no dogma in Mary's teachings, just a simple step-by-step process of "how to" find and feel this connection. Mary's spiritual teachings are not meant as a separate part of life, but are to be used in conjunction with everyday living - in business, in the home, with relationships, in dealing with difficult situations and communications.

Alone of All Her Sex : Myth and Cult of Virgin Mary
by Marina Warner
Shows how the figure of Mary has shaped and been shaped by changing social and historical circumstances and why for all their beauty and power, the legends of Mary have condemned real women to perpetualinferiority. Alone Of All Her Sex:Guideline to Goddess-inspired fiction. I have found this book to be an invaluable source of nearly-forgotten Marian myths, incredibly useful to anyone writing Goddess-oriented fiction. The tales of the power of Mary's milk--unheard of in ProtestantChristianity--are worth the price of the volume. If one thinks that we have only recently accepted the fullness of the feminine in Christianity, this book--especially the later sections on medieval myth--will come both as a blessing and a surprise....

Mary Through the Centuries: Her Place in the History of Culture

These manifestations include images from art, music, and literature, from Mary's Immaculate Conception to her bodily Assumption into Heaven. Pelikan minutely researches the universal appeal of Mary in the Old Testament, New Testament, and even the Koran, finding clues to her identity everywhere from the Bride in the Song of Solomon to the Mexican image of The Virgin of Guadeloupe.

Mother Mary Speaks to Us

by Brad Steiger, Sherry Hansen Steiger (Contributor)

From Publishers Weekly
Sherry Steiger has always felt Mary was vitally important and sustaining to her. As a child, she says, she experienced two visitations of Mary. The Steigers (Angels Over Their Shoulders, Fawcett Columbine, 1995) intersperse what might be considered unorthodox visitations of Mary, like the Mary who talks about reincarnation, with traditional sightings of Mary, like those at Fatima. Some of the more unusual visitations of Mary presented here?psychics, witches, channelers invoking Mary as a spirit guide; Mother Mary and Egyptian goddess Isis as one; speculation on the secret third prophecy of Fatima's Mary?would not be out of place as headlines in supermarket tabloids. While this book will clearly appeal to readers of New Age spirituality, it is may offend some Roman Catholic readers with its sensational speculation about the Holy Mother.
